At each stop, restaurant owners and chefs will greet and chat with tour participants behind the scenes about local culture, history and cuisine, they explain. Theme options are: Dessert Tour, Ultimate Food Tour and the Pub and Grub Crawl.

The Eskews came up with the business idea while on on a food tour in Asheville last year. “We saw this as something we can do together,” says Sandi Eskew. “Len always says that Western North Carolina draws creativity out of you that you never knew existed. … It’s all about creating experiences for people that they will remember for years to come.”

The tours launch on Friday, June 20, and are scheduled for 2-5 p.m. on select Fridays and Saturdays through November. Space is limited to 12 guests per tour. Cost ranges from $30 to $40 per person. Tours are open to all ages — except the Pub and Grub Crawl, which is only for ages 21 and older.

Written by Gina Smith via mountainx.com
vannoppenMon, 23 Jun 2014 09:40:58 +0000http://creativemountainfoodtours.com/blog/small-bites-a-taste-of-black-mountain/Food tours offer a taste of Black Mountainhttp://creativemountainfoodtours.com/blog/food-tours-offer-a-taste-of-black-mountain/
There’s a new company in Black Mountain that will help locals and tourists alike discover the drinks, dishes, and culture that local restaurants have to offer.

Sandi and Len Eskew will kick off their Creative Mountain Food Tours June 20. These tours will last from 2 - 5 p.m. on select Friday and Saturdays, and will incorporate small plate tastings in at least five local restaurants. Space is limited to 12 guests per tour.

The Eskews emphasized that the tours are for both visitors and Black Mountain natives.

“Black Mountain is a hidden culinary gem, and we want to help friends and visitors explore a taste of the town,” Sandi said. “There are so many great restaurants in a small, walkable area.”

Thirteen restaurants will participate in the Creative Mountain Food Tours. The restaurants had to meet certain criteria - they had to be locally owned and within reasonable walking distance of downtown Black Mountain. All of the owners must know the history of the building or area in which they operate, and they must have a desire to share their story with tour-goers.

“The people who are most excited about this are the chefs,” Len said. “They’re looking forward to telling their stories and giving inside looks into their restaurants.”

There are three tour theme options available: the Dessert Tour, the Ultimate Foodie Tour, and the Pub and Grub Crawl.

The Dessert Tour will feature a variety of sweets and will have non-alcoholic drink options available. The Ultimate Foodie Tour will resemble a progressive dinner and include a variety of small plate offerings, some of which will be paired with local beers and wines. The Pub and Grub Crawl will focus on local brews and snacks featured in Black Mountain restaurants and pubs, and is geared to adults 21 and over.

The Eskews said that they will incorporate more than just food in the tours. Tour stops will include meet and greets with the restaurant chefs and owners, who will provide information about themselves, the restaurant, and the surrounding area.

“We want to make this an entertaining afternoon for our guests,” Sandi said.

The Eskews moved to the mountains three years ago, and quickly fell in love with Black Mountain’s small-town feel.

They came up with the idea for the company last year, when Sandi was on a food tour in Asheville. The Eskews often took family and friends on impromptu “food tours” around the Black Mountain restaurants, and wanted to expose more people to the wide array of the town’s eateries.

Written by Katilin Mundy via Black Mountain News
vannoppenThu, 29 May 2014 20:36:23 +0000http://creativemountainfoodtours.com/blog/food-tours-offer-a-taste-of-black-mountain/In The News
